Pinewood Derby
Pinewood Derby

The Pinewood Derby is one of the most popular and successful family activities in Cub Scouting. Pinewood derby cars are small wooden models that Cub Scouts make with help from their families. Then they race the cars in competition. The cars are powered by gravity and run down a track. Every boy can design and build his own car to enter in the race.

Pack 961 races its Pinewood Derby cars in January each year. Prizes are awarded in several categories for design and painting, and of course the big honors are won on the track. Typically, each den races several heats to determine a den winner. At the end of the night all of the den winners race for the pack championship. Finally, there are sibling and adult divisions.

The Pinewood Derby is often the highlight of a scout’s year.

Raingutter RegataFun Summer Activities

Pack 961 sponsors six major events each summer. The summer events are open to those boys considering joining the Pack during the next year. Although some activities change from year to year, they usually include some of the following:

Raingutter Regatta – In the Raingutter Regatta, boats race down a narrow channel. There are two versions. The wind-powered version uses sailboat designs, and the boats are blown down the channel. The propeller-powered version uses motorboats driven by propeller.

Car Wash – Cub Scouts and their families participate in a fundraising car wash annually in August to help raise funds for exciting programming throughout the year.

Summer Family Campout – The Scouts and their families enjoy a summer camp outing at a nearby camping facility. Various, exciting activities are planned throughout the weekend along with campfires, songs, skits, delicious camp food, interfaith worship, and so much more.

Family Swim – The Pack gathers at a local swimming pool for a cool, refreshing swim party.

Family CampingFamily Camping

Our Pack sponsors four family camping trips each year at nearby campgrounds. Usually held during weekends in August, September/October, December, and April, the camps feature fishing, hiking, crafts, campfire stories and songs, and a lot of fun cooking and eating. Other highlights of family camping include skits and songs, dutch-oven cooking, and an early morning interfaith service.

Scouting Outings

Pack 961 sponsors a monthly outing that is fun and outdoors. Pack hikes, fishing, Dutch oven cooking, and untold millions of possibilities are out there for outdoor fun. These events are optional, and families are always invited.
